Orbea Look To Redefine Your Urban Mobility, Here’s How

Fusion were fortunate enough to start work with Orbea in December of 2023, the primary objective, to help the cooperatively owned brand to make a footprint in the space of urban mobility, starting with the launch of their new flagship urban e-bike, Diem.

The Fusion team were lucky enough to be among the first to ride it, in and around Mallabia, Orbea’s home in the Basque Country. The team has then helped to launch Diem to mainstream media, including gathering a group of key media at Dusseldorf’s Cycling World Europe expo in the second week of March.

Diem: The New A To B

A to B should be a pleasure, not a chore. Diem is a powerful e-city bike you can count on, a trusty partner that brings a touch of class to the day-to-day.

From the first moment you ride it, you know you are on something special, with quality components and a clever frame design that gives the smoothest ride. The dynamic motor and precise handling make it easy to weave through the city, while the bright wraparound lights help to keep you safe.

Drawing on Orbea’s rich experience, Diem is built on a deep understanding of performance, design, and the belief that riding should be enjoyable. That means an elegant design, removing anything superfluous, and pursuing simple solutions. Hydroforming and butting the aluminium tubing gives more control over the material, enhancing the design, reducing weight, and optimizing the frame rigidity. The final step is a High Polish finish, where the welds are polished to make them invisible giving Diem a smooth look. Diem's intelligent lighting system is designed to keep you visible day or night, while the Diamond Glide is a patented design that allows the frame to flex vertically, absorbing bumps and giving a smooth ride on rougher streets. The combination of a carbon fork and wider tyres helps absorb the bumps of rough streets.

Safety Built Into Every Journey

Every Diem has a built-in, high-tech lighting system which automatically switches on to keep you safe and light the way ahead. The wrap-around lights make sure you are always visible, day or night, even from the side, while the reactive rear lights brighten as you brake.
The Supernova Starstream headlight is integrated into the handlebar or the front of the optional rack. As well as being protected from damage or theft, this removes obstructions from the light beam, making you more visible. If you choose the optional Supernova Starstream dual beam light, you can easily switch between the low beam and the bright high beam.

Orbea’s integrated Spin Block system prevents the handlebars from rotating too far, making it much easier to load and unload your bike. All Diem models come with robust, high-quality tyres, with internal reinforcing to protect against punctures and reflective strips on the sidewalls to provide additional visibility. Hidden on the bike is space to secure an AirTag (or other compatible trackers). Diem comes with Orbea’s Quality Guarantee which is backed up with a lifetime warranty.

Full Power, Intelligent Control

Diem comes in three models; the 10, 20, and 30. Both Diem 10 and 20 come with a 630Wh battery, integrated into the downtube using the latest cell technology to pack more charge into a smaller space. That means around 150km, or 9 hours, between charges. A typical charge takes around 4 hours. Diem 30 comes with a highly optimized 540Wh battery that gives plenty of power for up to 120 Km. The battery in all models is fixed inside the frame, making it impossible to steal and allowing for better-looking, slimmer frames.

As one of the world's leading e-bike motor manufacturers, Shimano's EP motors offer simple, reliable service day after day, as well as an extensive network of service centres if you ever need them. The subtle remote is easy to control without moving your hands from the bars. The integrated LED lights tell you which assistance mode you are in. If you want more information then it is easy to connect your mobile, add it to the included mount, and access detailed system information.

Diem offers 20kg and 30kg rear carriers compatible with Ortlieb and MIK systems along with an optional 10 kg front rack and basket. The optional adaptor makes Diem 10 and Diem 20 compatible with Thule, Burley, Croozer and Hamax trailers. Diem 30 works with conventional thru axle adapters. The integrated kickstand pivots from the center of the bike and also integrates neatly when not in use. Integrating cables and switches in the handlebar means everything you need is right at your fingertips. The one-piece stem and handlebar is designed to make mounting your phone secure and easy with the integrated SP Connect system. The top tube power outlet offers a USB-C connection for charging your phone en route.
